Sphinx is an entertaining one-act play that asks serious questions about religious commitment. Fern is an aspiring stand-up comic who drops into the neighbouring Sphinx Centre looking for a purpose in her life, and also some comedy material.  As she falls under the spell of Max, the Centre’s charismatic director, we realise she is being initiated into a cult. Cally, Max’s loyal assistant, starts to become disillusioned, while Fern’s mother Judith, a traditional Anglican churchgoer, makes increasingly desperate attempts to see her daughter and find out what is going on. The tension spirals as Cally manages to escape but Fern is drawn ever deeper into Max’s coercive promises of spiritual liberation. 3w, 1m, plus non-speaking parts. The staging calls for changes between several locations, one of which is a church.
