Ruth by Sean Lang is based on the celebrated biblical story in which Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi stay together and support each other after losing their husbands. Returning to their native Bethlehem, Ruth finds work in the fields where she attracts the attention of a distant kinsman, Boaz. But here the story takes a turn that is less appealing to modern readers. Naomi urges Ruth to marry Boaz in order to regain the lands they lost when the men died. Another relation has first refusal on marriage with Ruth, though, and he does refuse. This nuanced script faces the unpalatable fact that Ruth is being haggled over, and transforms it by giving her an awareness of how her own identity is constantly being formed and re-formed.
