Canaanite Woman by Jane Bower is a powerful monologue that brings to life one of the Bible’s more challenging stories about Jesus. The speaker has to overcome her low social status as a Canaanite, and she desperately calls on Jesus as he speaks to the crowd. The disciples push her away disparagingly, and Jesus himself dismisses her appeal on grounds of race, saying it isn’t right to take food from children and give it to dogs (Matthew 15, 21-28).
